a.s.r. launches the Drive Safely app

a.s.r. is introducing the Drive Safely app, which blocks any distracting functions on your smartphone if you are driving over 15 kilometres an hour. The app is designed to help promote road safety. It is available to Android users from today and can be downloaded free of charge.

Half the Dutch population has a smartphone and uses it constantly, including behind the wheel. The temptation to read incoming WhatsApps, text messages, emails and internet alerts while driving is difficult for many drivers to resist. And that temptation can lead to dangerous traffic situations. Research has shown that nearly a quarter of accidents involving cars are due to driver distraction, often as a result of mobile phone use.

As a vehicle insurer, a.s.r. is keen to help improve traffic safety. It is therefore introducing the Drive Safely app, which has been designed to help drivers maintain their focus on the road.

How it works
The app kicks in as soon as the driver exceeds 15 kilometres an hour, and from then on blocks any distracting social media, text messages, emails, internet alerts and hand-held calls on your smartphone. You can still make hands-free calls and use your Sat Nav function. Once the car comes to a standstill, the app unblocks itself, allowing all your messages and notifications to come in again. If you are not behind the wheel or if you are travelling by public transport, you can put the Drive Safely app into 'passenger mode' to suspend the blocking function.

Anyone who has an Android phone can download the a.s.r. Drive Safely app from Google Play Store. For more information, visit www.asr.nl/rijveilig.
