The choice among customers to repair damage to their home and contents, rather than opt for full replacement, continues to grow. Since a.s.r. launched its sustainable repair damage approach in 2023. this is the first time a majority has chosen this option: in 2025, repair was selected in 55% of covered home and contents claims. This development aligns with a.s.r.’s efforts to further promote sustainable damage repair and reflects the commitment made by signing the Manifest Duurzaam Schadeherstel (“Sustainable Damage Repair Manifesto”) in 2023. Through this commitment, a.s.r. has pledged to help ensure that sustainable damage repair becomes standard practice in claims handling by 2027.
Impact damage to mobile phones, other small electronic devices and kitchen appliances topped a.s.r.’s list of most commonly reported claims in 2025. When covered, these damages can be claimed under the home or contents insurance. Depending on the type of damage, repair is offered to the customer. For example, in cases of water damage to mobile phones and tablets, repair companies can now restore nearly 95% of cases by replacing one or more components; only in about 5% of cases is repair no longer feasible. Damage to kitchen appliances can also often be repaired: in more than half of all claims involving induction hobs, repairing the appliance is possible by replacing only the glass plate.
Banu Arzu, deputy director of retail claims at a.s.r.: ‘It is encouraging to see that more and more customers are choosing repair. This reflects a broader movement towards using belongings more consciously and sustainably. Thanks to our expanding repair network, we are increasingly able to offer repair as a full‑fledged alternative to complete replacement. Together with our customers, we are taking steps towards a future in which repair becomes the norm. The benefit lies not only in preserving what is still in good condition, but also in reducing waste, minimising material use, and often achieving a faster resolution.’
a.s.r. began offering sustainable repair in 2020. Since 2023, a.s.r. has applied a consistent definition of sustainable repair. For this reason, 2023 is used as the base year in reporting.
