a.s.r., the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and Impact House by Grant Thornton present the whitepaper 'Towards financial education: what works!' to Joost Smits, Chair of the steering committee of Money Wise. The publication brings together insights from research and practice on what works well in financial education for young people. With this, the involved parties provide insight into which elements and preconditions contribute to effective financial education. a.s.r.’s involvement aligns with the ambition of a.s.r.’s Doenkracht programme to contribute to a financially aware, resilient and self-reliant Netherlands.
The whitepaper was drafted by Dr Aisa Amagir of the HvA and Impact House by Grant Thornton, commissioned by a.s.r. The findings are compiled in a whitepaper and translated into a practical tool – a so‑called reflection grid – consisting of a set of questions enabling schools and curriculum developers to evaluate and further develop their lessons.
During the 15th edition of Money Week, the whitepaper was officially presented to Money Wise and made available to the education sector. With this handover, a.s.r. requests that Money Wise also includes the findings from the whitepaper in the national education platform for financial education, Geldlessen.nl. This will support teachers in selecting what best fits and works for their classroom.
Willem van den Berg, COO life at a.s.r.: ‘Financial education is an important building block for the self‑reliance of young people. It is remarkable to see how the involved parties have combined their expertise to achieve this result together. It is great that a.s.r. can contribute through the Doenkracht programme. By bringing together knowledge from research and practice, we aim to support the education sector in strengthening and further developing effective financial education.’

Doenkracht is a.s.r.’s social programme and focuses on two themes: financial self‑reliance and helping by doing. Doenkracht funds projects for financial education and teaching programmes and supports organisations that help people facing (impending) financial problems to prevent their situation from worsening. In addition, Doenkracht mobilises a.s.r. colleagues to volunteer with social organisations.
