Dutch travellers go on holiday insured, but rarely check their cover

The Dutch are well-prepared when going on holiday: they check travel advice, keep an eye on the weather at their destination, and most also take out travel insurance. Yet hardly anyone checks in advance whether their insurance actually provides the right cover. This is evident from representative research conducted by Motivaction on behalf of a.s.r., among 1,355 Dutch respondents. A misunderstanding about what is covered can have unpleasant consequences. To think you are travelling with appropriate cover, only to find out after something goes wrong that you are not, is a risk that can easily be avoided.

Travel insurance is popular: 78% of Dutch people say they are insured, usually through a continuous insurance. In addition, 54% also have cancellation insurance. Travellers insure themselves against damage or theft during the trip, or – in the case of cancellation insurance – against unforeseen circumstances before departure. One potential cause of holiday damage is extreme weather.

Four in ten Dutch people already take the risk of extreme weather into account when choosing a destination. Nearly 20% have experienced damage caused by, for example, severe hailstorms, floods, or heatwaves. Yet only a quarter of travellers check their insurance cover prior to departure. So, although many travel insured, a large group is unaware of what is actually covered: 55% say they do not know whether water damage to a caravan caused by flooding is included in their policy. The same applies, for example, to a tent being blown away in a storm.

Erik Heijkamp, senior relationship manager non-life at a.s.r.: ‘The holiday season is just around the corner. Although Dutch travellers prepare well for their trip, it’s still surprising that less than half of those insured check their coverage in advance. A quick insurance check beforehand can help prevent unpleasant surprises. Review your policy, or call your advisor for personal advice, or to ask whether you have the right coverage. In short: be smart, travel well-informed.’
