More than 1,100 archaeological finds in study of the Battle of Ane

A special archaeological investigation was carried out last week at the De Groote Scheere estate near Holthone. More than 30 volunteers – including detector amateurs from the Stichting Overstichtse Oorlogen (SOO), veterans from the Recovery on the Battlefield (ROTB) foundation and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) – found over 1,100 items, some of which will be examined further in the period ahead. It is the first time in the Netherlands that a medieval battlefield has been systematically investigated.

Earlier, several possible battlefield finds had already been discovered on the estate, such as a rider’s spur, stirrups, an arrowhead and a horseshoe. This week, the researchers identified additional traces that will be further analysed in the coming period by archaeologists from the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. Bert Finke, project leader on behalf of SOO: ‘Over the past week, a large group of amateur metal detector researchers and veterans with PTSD have, together with archaeologists, been able to contribute to new historical insights. Based on the preliminary interpretation of the finds, it appears that we have moved a step closer to answering the question of where the battle began. The objects discovered that may have been used in that conflict will be examined in more detail by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands in the period ahead.’

For the 19 veterans who took part, it was a special week. Hans van de Ven, project leader on behalf of ROTB: ‘It has been a special week for our veterans. Although everyone served at different times and in different places around the world, there is strong mutual recognition. Many have been stuck at home for years. By contributing to this scientific research, they were able to leave their trauma behind for a while and simply be human again. That is of immeasurable value.’
