'Climate change and energy transition' is one of the three core themes within a.s.r.'s sustainability policy. In this climate report, a.s.r. discloses its policy, objectives, activities, performance and its climate risks. In addition, the report provides a clear picture of how a.s.r. is committed to combatting climate change, by reducing CO2 emissions, by helping its customers to protect themselves against climate related risks and by promoting the energy transition.

Lobbying for Climate Aligment

a.s.r. is member of several industry associations and participates actively within those organisations in working groups, ad hoc platforms and at a board level. This strong participation allows a.s.r. to monitor and influence the alignment with the Paris Agreement. Two executive board members of a.s.r have a position within an industry association (Annual Report 2024, page 101).

These and other organizations in which a.s.r. participates have sustainability high on the agenda and to that extent the strategic direction in the field of sustainability is the same. Where the ambitions of industry organizations differ from those of a.s.r., there is always room to be more ambitious individually and 'to lead by example'. At the same time, industry associations provide a platform to learn from each other and help in the sustainability transition.

Platform for Sustainable Finance

Financial sector, regulators and ministries together play a role in making the Netherlands more sustainable. They cooperate with each other within the Platform for Sustainable Finance.

The platform chooses themes on which working groups will work. Each working group includes broad representation from the financial sector and other relevant parties, such as central government. The members work out a theme together and present their findings.

a.s.r. actively participates in several working groups under the sustainable finance platform, for example the national climate adaptation working group.

a.s.r. consciously and visibly chooses to separate waste on site. The hygiene partner is responsible for the separate collection and processing of waste materials at a.s.r.'s site, ensures an optimal container park and that the containers are suitable for all desired waste streams. Post-separation of waste is not desired for this reason due to the separation of waste on site.

The following waste streams are collected separately:

5. Paper/cardboard
6. Industrial waste
7. Specific waste for remodeling projects
8. Small hazardous office waste
9. Construction and demolition waste
The waste is collected by a specialised waste company. They weigh the waste and upload the information in their portal. This enables a.s.r. to monitor the waste and recycling and take action if necessary.

The target for 2024 for total waste disposal in metric tonnes is 125. Despite the higher occupancy rate at the office, the ambition is to maintain and improve the amount of waste and improve the waste separation process.

Lifetime interest mortgage

This mortgage is mainly aimed at elderly people. The interest rate of your loan is fixed for life as long as you and your partner live in the house. You pay this interest every month to a.s.r. The interest is not added to your loan. So your debt does not increase. Because your interest rate is fixed for life, you never get an interest rate change. You pay the same interest on the loan every month and therefore the same amount every month. So you don't have to worry that your monthly expenses will increase later.

#1 Business Management tools or trainings

Due to the combination of a.s.r. and Aegon NL the societal programs of both companies that contributes to financially resilience were interwoven into ‘Doenkracht’:

In our 5 branch cities we collaborate with local partners with an initiative aimed at mitigating (potential) financial issues of citizens. These partners operate according to a methodology and aim for demonstrable impact growth. The partners contribute to a.s.r.'s Theory of Change .

Although the aim of this part of Doenkracht is to work on social impact, the purpose is NOT to come to a QUANTITATIVE KPI. The social impact is created at participant level via the projects and programs; which a.s.r. supports financially and with an educational program on creating impact (by Impact House, Grant Thornton).

#2 Financial or digital literacy training

Half of all people with financial problems have a low literacy rate. a.s.r. believes that financial education and developing language in children and young people is crucial and helps parents to teach their children to become financially literate.

In 2024, 236 (2023: 308) a.s.r. employees volunteered 4,925 hours (2023: 5,930) for example by giving guest lectures at schools or becoming a financial buddy (financial home visitor).

#3 Technical assistance

There are many vulnerable groups in the Netherlands who need help and encouragement. Community-based organizations, which provide such support, often depend on volunteers. a.s.r. encourages its employees to give their time and effort to these causes, which is called Helping by Doing. Volunteers within a.s.r. can choose from more than forty society projects set out by social organisations that could use some assistance, such as taking elderly out for a refreshing walk in the forest or pick fruit with people with intellectual disabilities.

In 2024 1,299 (2023: 1,326) a.s.r. employees volunteered in 137 (2023: 134) different activities for a total of 8,873 hours (2023: 6,765).
